Andrew L. Cowles

Program Mate, SSS Nautilus

Andrew L. Cowles is the Program Mate for the SSS Nautilus, Sea Scout Ship 461, and has been the Ship's Program Mate since its inception on 1 October 2012.  As the Program Mate, Mate Cowles assists the Skipper in carrying out the Ship's program and, in the absence of the Skipper, assumes the duties of the Skipper.  The Program Mate also works closely with the Boatswain's Mate for Program in carrying out the activities of the Ship as decided upon and organized by the Ship's petty officers.

Andy Cowles has more than twenty (20) years of Scouting experience under his belt, having joined Cub Scout Pack 10 in Franconia in 1983.  After earning his Arrow of Light, he bridged over to Boy Scout Troop 461 in 1987 and earned his Eagle Scout Award in 2003.  That same year he served as one of the adult leaders during Troop 461's three (3) week trip to Austria, Lichtenstein, and Switzerland, which also included a week of summer camp at Techuana Camp with Scout Group 12 from Vienna, Austria.  Andy still serves as an Assistant Scoutmaster with Boy Scout Troop 461 since 2003 and is a fully-trained Assistant Scoutmaster.

Andy is a fully-trained Sea Scout leader and in October 2012 commenced working on his Sea Scout Sea Badge, the advanced leadership training for Sea Scout leaders, completing his Sea Badge in September 2013.  He has also assisted in teaching the Sea Scout Adult Leader Basic Training (SSALBT) course at the Delaware Valley Flotilla annual training weekend at Pine Tree Training Center in Tabernacle, New Jersey.

Andy developed his interest in sailing early on and has been sailing various sized vessels since he was a young boy.  He is currently the proud owner of a Catalina 22 sailboat that he has currently moored in a slip at the Lake Nockamixon Marina near Quakertown, Bucks County, PA.  He continually tinkers with his vessel, installing a number of electrical devices and enjoys listening to his stereo system whilst on the water.  Andy transported his Catalina 22 sailboat to the Haliburton Scout Reserve in Canada for Ship 461's first Long Cruise in July of 2013.  He also owns a 19-foot bowrider motorboat that badly needs an engine overhaul and a smaller 14-foot sailboat.

Andy is employed at Vixen Fox Industries of Morgantown, Pennsylvania, Earl Bowl Lanes in Franconia, Pennsylvania, and has his own computer business, C-N-Services.  He and his partner, Lori, have two children, Carlee Cowles and Mason Andrew Cowles.
