Scouting
for Food - 2012
BSA's National Good Turn for America
10 & 17 November 2012
The Cradle of Liberty Council held
its annual "Scouting for Food" food drive during the weekends of 10 and 17
November 2012. Ship 461 was pleased to participate in this annual "Good
Turn for America" in conjunction with Troop 461, Troop 401 and Pack 401, all
from the Souderton Borough to solicit food donations from Borough residents for
Souderton's local food bank, the Keystone Opportunity Center.
Saturday,
10 November 2012, was the day on which the Scouts went through the Borough
distributing the food donation bags along with some printed matter explaining
that the Scouts were seeking donations of non-perishable food and stressing that
all of the donated food would stay in the local area to assist local families in
need. The Scouts tried to give every resident of Souderton the opportunity
to donate some items of non-perishable food to assist their less well-off
neighbors.
The following Saturday, 17
November 2012, the Scouts returned to the neighborhoods they visited the
previous week in order to pick up any items of donated food. The Souderton
Scout Cabin on Wile Avenue across from the Souderton Community Pool was the
nerve center of Saturday's food pick-up operation.
Scouts and adult leaders picked up the plastic bags with the food donations and
brought them to the Souderton Scout Cabin. There, another group of Scouts
and leaders sorted the items, counted them, and boxed them for delivery to the
Keystone Opportunity Center in downtown Souderton. The Scouts began
picking up the donated food items at 9:00 a.m. and delivered their last
trailer-load of boxed donated food to the Keystone Opportunity Center by 1:00
p.m.
The Scouts collected more than Six Thousand (6,000) items of canned, boxed, and packaged non-perishable food items for the Keystone Opportunity Center. It took two (2) trailer-loads in order to deliver the donated food to the local food bank. Some adults were kept busy going to local stores seeking additional boxes in which the donated food could be packed for delivery to the food bank.
Despite being a small Ship, SSS Nautilus (461) had 2/3 of its adult leaders and 2/3 of its Crew Members participating in the 2012 Scout for Food drive in Souderton.
